Are you familiar with chaga? Chaga is known as “Gift from God” and the “Mushroom of Immortality”. It’s an ancient remedy that has been valued for its many health benefits for centuries. Chaga is a mushroom that grows on trees. It makes phytochemical that strengthen and heal the tree. It’s very nutritious. Chaga contains B vitamins, minerals such as copper, calcium, potassium, manganese, zinc, iron, as well as flavonoids, phenols and enzymes. Chaga supports the entire body. In some countries, people drink it daily. Russians also discovered that chaga is the most potent adaptogen known. Adaptogenic plants and mushrooms help to bring the body back into balance and have beneficial effects on the digestive, nervous, immune, endocrine and cardiovascular system. It helps to support the body and mind, and help us cope with daily stress.
So I had fresh chaga at home, that my godmother harvested locally here in Quebec. I made an infusion by boiling water and let steep the mushrooms in simmering water for a few hours. You can drink it just as it is; it makes a wonderful tea, or use it as a base for smoothies like this chaga cacao smoothie. Chaga can also be found in most health food stores.
Chaga pairs very well with cacao. I also added maca, which is a Peruvian root vegetable that increase energy, balance mood and promote sexual function, as well as providing various vitamins and minerals. There’s also raw honey, another incredible super food. The other ingredients are raw almond butter, nutmeg, himalayan sea salt and a frozen banana.
This is what I call a superfood smoothie! I hope you enjoy it and incorporate more chaga into your life:)
- 1 cup chaga tea/infusion
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- 1 tbsp raw cacao powder
- ½-1 tbsp raw honey
- Dash nutmeg
- Pinch Himalayan sea salt
- Blend all ingredients until nice and smooth.
