Many years ago, food was naturally organic and this term wasn’t really used. Most people were growing their own foods and most of the food eaten was local; food was whole, fresh, and clean. Today, it’s a different story. Most of the food we eat is processed, our soil is devoid of nutrients, and most of our foods are grown with the use of pesticides and other chemicals, and may even be genetically modified or irradiated, which really affects our health. Also, our animals live in terrible and inhumane conditions, and the conventional meat and product that is eaten by most people is unclean and very poor quality, which also dramatically affects our health. Most of the foods we eat don’t even come from our area, but from different places around the world. The food travels a lot before being on our plate, which not only affects the food itself and us, but also affects the health of our planet as well.
Organic farming is not only healthier for us, but also healthier for our animals and our environment. Organic fields have many more wild plants and animals, and our animals are much healthier as they live in better conditions and are fed with organic food – meaning that the food they eat is appropriate for them and is clean. Organic meat comes from animals that haven’t received antibiotics, growth hormones, or other chemicals, which make the meat cleaner and a much better choice for those who consume animal food. In terms of organic fruits and vegetables, they are grown in richer soil – which means that they contain more nutrients, and they are much safer for us as they haven’t been grown with the use of pesticides, waxes, or other harmful chemicals. They are also not irradiated or genetically modified. And spiritually speaking, I believe that organic foods have a better energy than conventional foods.
Pesticides and other toxins found in conventional foods have been linked to many serious health problems such as autism in children, nerve damage, infertility, and cancer. Pregnant women and children should especially be careful with their exposure to those chemicals to prevent any pregnancy complications or birth defects. Whole, organic foods are a much healthier choice, as the food is more nutritious and cleaner. However, it’s important to understand that it doesn’t mean that a food labeled as organic is automatically healthy. It’s obviously best to stick with what’s organic, but also what’s whole and fresh. Local foods are also a very healthy choice as they are fresh and as they support local agriculture. Some might not be organic, but since they are fresh and seasonal, they can be an even better choice than a food that is organic but not fresh.
In a perfect world, we would be eating food that is both organic and local, but today, it can become expensive. If you can’t do both, I believe it’s best to focus on getting real and fresh foods by encouraging your local farmers, and by going organic only for the most important foods such as meat, eggs and dairy products, as well as some fruits and vegetables. By eating local, not only do you get fresher foods, but you are supporting your and your family’s health, and you are also making a difference by supporting sustainable agriculture, local economy, our animals, as well as our natural resources.
