There are many different opinions and belief about what we should eat and what we shouldn’t, and it can be very confusing. For instance, some will say to avoid all animal products while others will say we need them to be healthy. I do not believe in diets as I do not believe that there is no one-size-fits-all diet, but I strongly believe that to remain healthy, we should mainly eat from plants, and eat foods that are whole, fresh, and clean. I also believe in the importance of having a varied diet, and of course, eating foods that makes us feel good.
One of the main problems we have with animal food today is that most of the meat and meat by-products that are consumed are low quality – if not highly processed, and are consumed in excess. Most of the meat we have on the market – depending what’s eaten – contains antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, heavy metals, preservatives, additives, GMO’s, and other toxins that affect our health, especially when eaten regularly. Excess of animal proteins can cause kidney damage, osteoporosis and even cancer. Animal proteins have the tendency to leach calcium from the bones, as they are high in sulfur-containing amino acids, which tend to acidify the blood.
Eating mainly from plants mean that your diet consists mainly of fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, whole grains, legumes, superfoods, and more. This way of eating is very beneficial for our health as it provides a lot of vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, fibers, and water, which support heart health, digestive health, and helps to protect us against different types of diseases and cancer. This way of eating is known to promote longevity and is a great way to support our animals and our environment. However, it’s important to remember that it doesn’t mean if you exclude all animal foods from your diet that you are healthy. It’s important to focus on having a healthy and varied diet that consists mainly of nutrient-dense foods.
In terms of soy, soy is a very common and popular food but it’s not something that I recommend eating regularly. Most of the soybeans we have today are genetically modified and soy is one of the most common food allergen. Soy is also known to lead to certain health problems such as fatigue, infertility, heavy metal toxicity, Alzheimer disease, endocrine and thyroid problems. If soy is consumed, it’s best to choose organic, whole and fermented products, and eat them in moderation. Fermented soy products are the healthiest ones because they are easier to digest and they do not contain phytic acid, a component present in non-fermented soy products that blocks mineral absorption in the body. It’s best to avoid processed soy food and products.
I believe that to remain healthy, our diet should consists mainly of plant foods and foods that are whole, fresh, and clean. If animal foods are kept in the diet, it’s best to get sustainable, organic products, and eat them occasionally or in moderation. I like to encourage people to go completely meatless at least one day a week, or one meal a day if possible, and build from there. I believe that eating mainly from plants would not only make a big impact on our health, but also a positive impact on our environment and our planet.
