BABY’S FIRST FOOD IDEAS - Conscious Cooking


The very first foods eaten by your infant should be easy to digest and unlikely to provoke an allergic reaction. You may want to start with fruits or vegetables but pastured egg yolks and grass-fed meat are also a terrific nutritive choice. Homemade bone broth is also an excellent first “food” as it’s extremely nourishing and helps seal the gut lining, thereby strengthening the digestive and immune system. Bone broth can be given with a syringe or put into a cup. When using animal products, it’s always best to use organic or pasture-raised products. It’s very important to feed your growing baby with the best quality food possible. You may want to keep in mind that cereals do not have to be your baby’s first food. There are definitely more nutritive choices out there. You can also choose to purée the food but it’s not necessary after six months.

Here are some great first food ideas:

  • Homemade chicken bone broth
  • Egg yolk, preferably from pastured chickens, lightly boiled
  • Organic liver, steamed or boiled or frozen for 14 days, and then grated onto foods
  • Puréed meats – chicken, beef, lamb, liver, and fish
  • Fermented foods – organic grass-fed kefir or yogurt, taro, and cultured vegetable juice
  • Cooked vegetables – beets, broccoli, carrots, parsnip, peas, rutabaga, squash, sweet potato, and zucchini
  • Raw fruits – avocado, ripe banana (with brown spots on it), papaya, and mango
  • Cooked fruits – apples, apricots, peaches, and pears
